One Day in the Land of Tribute

is an intimate communal sensorial experience created for 12 people.

On the far edge of New York’s Long Island (in the native Algonquin language, Paumanauk, meaning the land of tribute) blooms a tiny, endangered flower - the Agalinis acuta. Each flower blooms only one morning a year, at dawn. Only eleven communities are left in the world, and of late they have not been faring so well. The best-surviving community lives on a small parcel of beach-front land Andy Warhol donated to The Nature Conservancy.

At 5 o'clock in the morning of August 27th we gather twelve humans to witness the beautiful, disappearing phenomenon of one tiny fellow species on our planet earth. By noon, most of the petals will have begun to fall.

The evening prior, a dinner created by 'Best New Chefs' Sarah Hymanson and Sara Kramer explores the poetic and historical trajectory of the Agalinis acuta and its interwoven story with ecological and human succession...from the melting of the glaciers, to Native American land-burning practices, to the introduction of the railroad and transatlantic flight, to the creation of the first suburban development and finally the establishment of genetic analysis.
